Beyond E-Learning to E-OD: Using Technology to Build Participation in Decision-Making

Some people claim that E-learning is "dead." And it is true that "electronic page turners" are not very effective in building interactivity-which is key to effective learning. According to Training, 78% of all e-learning courses offered by companies are "self-directed"-and that often means that they are nothing more than "electronic page turners."

But is blended learning the only alternative to old-style e-learning? The answer is "no." A more exciting alternative is to apply the new and emerging technologies of instruction to management. When that is done, "trainers" and "instructional technologists" become "organization development professionals."

But what is OD? How can it be merged with technology assistance to go beyond traditional e-learning and blended learning, having an impact greater than "performance support." Hear the answer in this session.

Leverage Your E-Learning: Meeting the Core Needs of Your Organization with Training + Performance Support

Is E-Learning always enough? Of course not! Effectively using knowledge and skills on-the-job is what really counts. This presentation focuses on the many ways that E-Learning developers can enhance the value of their programs by combining them with performance support solutions.

Participants will be able to:

1.Describe the links and gaps between training and on-the-job performance

2.Ask the best questions to arrive at a true understanding of training and performance problems

3.Describe several key non-training interventions that can enhance E-Learning programs

4.Given a scenario, determine the type of solution system that might best address the problem

Games that Teach: Simple computer games for training adults

Computer games can make training more engaging and more effective. Games implement principles of effective teaching, such as interactivity, feedback, multi-modal presentation, and graduated challenge. Games allow people to discover patterns, trends, and relationships for themselves.

Games can make training more appealing to those who consider traditional training boring beyond endurance. And they are especially effective for seducing learners into taking the dreaded TEST.

This session will help you decide when to use games, choose the appropriate game for the type of learning you are trying to effect, and save time and money in developing games.

Competency Modeling Applied to E-Learning: Using E-Learning to Build Competencies

Competency modeling is a source of confusion. The term "competency" itself is not clear, and meanings associated with it can vary internationally.

In this session, hear how competency modeling can be conducted-and can then be used as a focal point for e-learning and blended learning to enhance organizational productivity.

Upon completing this 3-day workshop, participants will:

Define the term "competency" and explain how competencies are identified and are used as a focal point for productivity enhancement

Describe methodologies for competency identification, assessment and enhancement

Explain how competencies can become a focal point for e-learning and blended learning efforts

Designing Instruction for Web-Based Training

This workshop is based on proven instructional design principles adapted to take advantage of the web and the corporate intranet for distance and self-paced learning. You will apply what you learn in the course to a project of your own with feedback from your instructor and colleagues. The course focuses on the practical aspects of designing web-based training and helps you determine how best to design, develop, implement, and evaluate web-based training.

This workshop is for those course developers, content experts, and trainers who will be developing instruction for a web-based training site. This workshop is also for project managers who will be managing the development of web-based training either with their staff or with contractors. Training managers who want a consistent methodology and approach to designing web-based training for their training department will find our systematic approach invaluable. And web designers who want an effective methodology for developing web-based training will be introduced to a process that works effectively and efficiently for all subject matters.

E-Learning Design Certificate

This certificate is all about design-not theories or tool-operation-just the design of effective, economical e-learning. Learn how you can use e-learning technologies and media to create learning experiences that educate and engage.

You will learn to:

1.Activate even the dullest subject in ways that provide authentic practice andengage e-learners. Assess progress: measure what learning has occurred and provide accurate and motivating feedback to learners.

2.Select and use appropriate media-text, graphics, sound, music, voice, animation, and video.

3.Organize the course: how to structure and sequence learning experiences to implement particular instructional strategies or achieve specific learning goals.

4.Design the visual display: what screens should look like and how to balance aesthetics and functionality.

5.Accommodate external standards and requirements such as SCORM and W3C Web Accessibility guidelines.

6.Set your strategy: pure or blended, stand-alone or embedded, synchronous or asynchronous, learner-led or instructor led.

7.Plan, prepare, and deliver effective training in the virtual classroom.

8.Design and produce simulations that are fun and highly educational.
